Urban Bicycle Race Set to Roll Tonight, Sept 30, 2011
September 30, 2011
St Louis, MO – St Louis’ only bicycle delivery service, South Grand Delivered, is teaming up with local urban cycling website, www.SpokedStL.com, to host an Alley Cat bike race tonight, Friday, Sept 30. “Alley Cat” is a bicycle race that rewards riders for their knowledge of the area in which they are racing. Riders will be given a list of checkpoints but only a vague map and no set route. Some riders may finish in as little as 45 minutes, others may take closer to 2 hours – it all depends on how fast they ride and how well they know the city streets.
This race is called “5 fountains,” and will feature 5 of the River City’s most iconic and best lit fountains as check-points. Lighting is important as this is the first of 5 races to be held under the banner of the “Lit-Up Alley Cat Race Series,” where each race will have lights and lighting as a feature of each checkpoint. Beginning at 7pm, twitter users interested in being spectators of the event may look to @SpokedStL and @SGrandDelivered to find out where within the city checkpoints will be located.
“It’s been years since there’s been an alley cat [race] held in this city,” explains race organizer and SpokedStL founder Matt Hartman. “Since then, bike culture has really changed – there are literally hundreds more urban cycling enthusiasts out on the streets – and we wanted to present a race that reflects the growth-of and excitement-about riding bikes.”
The event will begin with a gathering and pre-party that will include Pabst Blue Ribbon beer and the Wanderlust Pizza food truck at the Stone Pavilion in Tower Grove Park. The ride ends at the Handle Bar, a bicycle themed bar located in The Grove neighborhood.
“We expect participants to ride safely and respect the rules of the road,” shares South Grand Delivered co-owner Andy Heaslet. “We also require riders to have helmets on and to be well lit – another reason for us calling the race ‘Lit-up.’” In fact, there will be prizes awarded for those who most creatively adorn their bicycles with lights. Other prizes come from local businesses including meals from Local Harvest and Natty’s pizza, apparel from Lighthouse Screen Printing and StL Style, as well as bike accessories from Spoked StL and St Louis Bike Polo. The big prizes, though, will be trophies made from repurposed bike parts and designed by Wheeler Welding.
“Don’t be intimidated by the word ‘race,’” says Hartman, who expects 75 or more to participate in the event. “The whole point is to get people to have a whole lot of fun on bikes.” With two parties, glow sticks at every check point, food trucks, beer, and an anything goes bike ride, it appears as if the organizer’s goals are going to be met!
To participate, cyclists should bring a bike, helmet, lights, and five dollars to the Stone Pavilion in Tower Grove Park at 5pm on Friday, Sept 30th. The race will start at 7:15 and the after party is set to begin around 9pm at the Handle Bar, 4127 Manchester Rd. For more information, visit http://on.fb.me/5fountains .
